The primary benefit for using the Docutech equipment as a book printer, is that it is fast, and price friendly in small quantities of up to about a thousand units. It also provides a better looking product on the text pages than web printing due to the whiter paper, typically used and the higher line screen. When using the Docutech as your book printer for manuals, you will not wind up with a finished product that would be a full 8.5 x 11", due to the need to trim from three sides during perfect binding. This is nota problem with a saddle stitched booklet. Another benefit of using the Docutech as a book printer, is that it can accept file formats for printing, that a web press traditionally will not. Programs such as Word or Publisher are not a problem with a Docutech book printer.

You save money with the web press as a book printer

The web press as a book printer is meant for the longer runs and is a high speed printing press. Unlike the Docutech, the line screen is usually lower and your page counts will need to be divided by 8, which is the smallest signature a web book printer will run, unlike the Docutech where your finished product will have a page count divided by two.  This is why you will always see blank pages in the back from your web book printer. It is simply not cost effective to run less than an eight page signature. As a web printing press, in addition to our Docutech printing, we can save you money with our high speed web presses and would be happy to quote your next project. One benefit from using a web press for printing, is that there is a wider choice of paper stocks. The Docutech is limited to smooth paper stocks only, due to the need for the toner to adhere to the paper stock. Web printing can use vellum and wove stocks as well as custom finishes when available.
