The primary benefit for using the Docutech equipment as a book printer, is that it is fast, and price friendly in small quantities of up to about a thousand units. It also provides a better looking product on the text pages than when web printing is used by a book printer, due to the whiter paper, typically used and the higher line screen. When using the Docutech as your book printer for manuals, you will not wind up with a finished product that would be a full 8.5 x 11", due to the need to trim from three sides during perfect binding. This is not a problem with a saddle stitched booklet. Another benefit of using the Docutech as a book printer, is that it can accept file formats for custom book printing, that a web press traditionally will not. Programs such as Word or Publisher are not a problem with a Docutech book printer.

The web press for a book printer is meant for the longer runs and is a high speed printing press. Unlike the Docutech, the line screen is usually lower and your page counts will need to be divided by 8, which is the smallest signature a web press book printer will run, unlike the Docutech where your finished product will have a page count divided by two.  This is why you will always see blank pages in the back of your project when you print using a web book printer. It is simply not cost effective for a book printer to run less than an eight page signature.
